Ramallah – September 5, 2016: The Palestinian Working Woman Society for Development (PWWSD) concluded a training course today titled “Internal Legal Procedures of the Family Protection Unit in Relation to Applied Laws in Palestine and International Agreements”. This course comes as part of the project “Strengthening Women’s Access to Justice in the Occupied Palestinian Territories” implemented with funding from UN Women, through Sawasya (the UN Women/UNDP joint program – Strengthening the Rule of Law: Justice and Security for the Palestinian People 2014-2017).
The training was conducted by Haleema Abu Sulb over a 3-day period (20 training hours), targeting 14 members of the Family Protection Unit from all West Bank governorates.
It is noted that the first training course was conducted in late July. Both courses aimed to strengthen the role of the target group in regards to implementing the rule of law, applying procedures, and developing their performance. This serves to improve their performance and raise their awareness of the law and procedures applied in Palestine from a gender and human rights perspective. These are essential indicators of the level of applied justice, and the course addressed concepts and skills related to the law and the basic rights of Palestinian women based on gender equality and nondiscrimination. In addition to strengthening and raising the participants’ awareness on how to utilize international human rights and relevant agreements, in particular the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), when applying the penal code, code of criminal procedure, and the project for the family protection from violence law. Highlighting the need to improve the responsiveness of these laws to the rights of battered women, the course then developed the capacities of participants dealing with battered women within the framework of international laws and Palestinian law.
Trainer, Haleema Abu Sulb focused on the needs and experiences of the target group, by working on preparing an awareness plan aiming to empower the group, including all training activities and techniques, and creating a sequence of sessions within a unified approach of all course contents. A participatory interactive approach was used to create training sessions and activities, including live testimonies related to children and women’s rights before the law.
Participants concluded the course by recommending more training courses of this kind, as well as expressing their gratitude to PWWSD and the organizers of these important courses.
